Best Smart Home Hubs UK 2026: Matter, Zigbee & Local Control

How we evaluated: This recommendation is based on official specifications, UK availability and comparative research. It was not hands-on tested by Smart Home UK.

There is no honest universal winner because a voice speaker, vendor lighting bridge and multi-radio automation controller solve different problems. Choose by existing devices and required radios first, then compare local automation, cloud/account dependence, privacy, support and complete UK cost.

Aqara Hub M200: current Aqara-first recommendation

The exact M200 combines a Matter Controller, Thread Border Router/mesh extender, hub for Aqara Zigbee devices and a Matter bridge for supported Aqara Zigbee products. Aqara states capacity for 40 Aqara Zigbee plus 40 Thread devices. That is a manufacturer capacity statement, not a guarantee that every ecosystem exposes every bridged capability.

Its network and installation options are unusually broad: dual-band Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet with PoE, or USB-C power. It also includes a 38kHz infrared blaster and 90dB speaker. A USB power adapter is not included, so choose one supported power route and include the required adapter, PoE switch/injector or Ethernet cable.

Buy it if: Aqara Zigbee devices form the core of the home and you also need a Thread Border Router and Matter Controller.

Skip it if: Z-Wave, unrestricted cross-brand Zigbee coordination or Home Assistant-level custom integration is required. Bridging is platform- and device-dependent.

The Aqara G410 doorbell and G350 camera also contain specialist hub/controller functions, but neither is a universal replacement for a centrally placed M200. Choose them primarily for their doorbell or camera role.

Home Assistant radio warning

One ZBT-2 can run Zigbee or Thread, not both at once. Use two dedicated adapters if the installation needs both networks. Z-Wave requires ZWA-2. The Green page still contains an older Thread support under development line while the current ZBT-2 product page supports Zigbee or Thread; use the device page for the current adapter capability.

How to choose

  • List every radio your current devices require.
  • Separate a Matter controller from a Thread border router, Zigbee coordinator and vendor bridge.
  • Check which automations run locally and which need an account or cloud.
  • Price all adapters, bridges, storage and subscriptions.
  • Verify the exact UK SKU, warranty and support route before buying.
