What can be an Apple Home hub?
| Device | Role | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| HomePod, 2nd generation | Apple Home hub, Matter controller and Thread border router | Confirm current model and basket price |
| HomePod mini | Apple Home hub, Matter controller and Thread border router | Confirm colour/model and basket price |
| Apple TV 4K | Apple Home hub and Matter controller; Thread and Ethernet depend on exact generation/configuration | Check model number and ports before relying on a Thread role |
Setup
- Update the Apple device and household iPhones/iPads.
- Use the intended Apple Account and enable two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain.
- Add the hub to the correct Home and check its connected status.
- Add accessories by exact code/model and test automations locally and remotely.
Optional: iCloud+ for supported camera recording
An Apple Home hub does not require iCloud+ for ordinary accessory control and automations. A supported iCloud+ plan is relevant to HomeKit Secure Video recording and its camera-count limits. Check the current Apple UK plan and exact camera support before presenting a cost.
Privacy and resilience
Review household permissions, secure-router/network settings, camera recording rules and account recovery. Keep manual controls for essential heating and lighting.
