A security camera can work without a monthly subscription when its useful recordings are stored locally and its core detection does not require a paid plan. That does not mean “no extra cost”: allow for a suitable microSD card, safe power, mounting hardware and possibly a hub. Tapo C520WS is our practical mains-powered outdoor pick; Aqara G350 is the feature-rich indoor choice; and Tapo C660 KIT suits outdoor positions where a power cable is impractical.

- Best value for continuous outdoor coverage: Tapo C520WS. It is mains powered, records to microSD, connects over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet and supports RTSP and ONVIF. Pick it when a socket and cable route are available.
- Best indoor smart-home camera: Aqara Camera Hub G350. Its dual-lens indoor design combines a 4K wide view with a 2.5K telephoto view, local storage, hub functions and Matter certification. Platform support is still ecosystem-dependent.
- Best for a difficult outdoor power location: Tapo C660 KIT. It combines a rechargeable camera with a solar panel, 4K video, pan-and-tilt coverage and local microSD storage. Sunlight, activity and settings determine real battery performance.

1. Tapo C520WS: best value without a mandatory plan
The Tapo C520WS records at 2560 × 1440, which TP-Link correctly describes as 2K QHD 4MP. It is not a 4K camera. Its pan-and-tilt mechanism gives broad outdoor coverage, while the published detection set includes people, pets, vehicles, line crossing and tampering without making cloud storage mandatory for core use.
Power and networking are the decisive details. The camera uses the included 9V DC adapter, so it is mains powered rather than battery powered. It connects through 2.4GHz Wi-Fi or a 10/100 Ethernet port; it does not gain 5GHz Wi-Fi simply because a newer router provides it. A weatherproof cable route and outdoor-safe power arrangement matter more than the app setup.
A microSD card of up to 512GB can hold local footage, while Tapo Care is optional. Published RTSP and ONVIF support is useful with compatible local recording software or an NVR. Verify the exact hardware version and firmware features before ordering.

2. Aqara Camera Hub G350: best indoor hub and camera
The Aqara G350 is a mains-powered indoor pan-and-tilt camera, not an outdoor alternative to the Tapo models. It pairs a 4K wide-angle lens with a 2.5K telephoto lens for 9× hybrid zoom, and Aqara publishes person and pet tracking. A physical privacy mode retracts the lens when the camera is turned off.
Local recording can use a Class 10 microSD card up to 512GB, including 24/7 recording. Aqara also documents NAS transfer through the SD-card workflow and an optional encrypted cloud service. The G350 doubles as an Aqara Zigbee hub, Matter controller and bridge, and it is Matter-certified as a camera. That certification does not guarantee identical recording, pan-and-tilt or alert features in every platform: Aqara explicitly says ecosystem support varies, while Apple Home video is limited to 1080p and requires the appropriate Apple home hub and iCloud+ plan for HomeKit Secure Video.

3. Tapo C660 KIT: best solar pan-and-tilt option
Tapo C660 KIT is the alternative for a garden, side passage or detached area where a safe permanent power cable is difficult. TP-Link publishes 4K 8MP video, 360-degree pan-and-tilt coverage, person, pet and vehicle detection, dual-band 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi and local microSD storage up to 512GB. Tapo Care remains optional.
Solar does not mean installation-independent. The panel needs useful direct light while the camera retains stable Wi-Fi and the intended view. Live viewing, frequent events, cold and shade can change charging performance. Treat sunlight figures as scenario-based and plan for manual charging if the site cannot sustain the selected settings.

Installation, privacy and security checks
- Map the field of view before drilling. Avoid filming more of a neighbour’s home, garden or a public area than is necessary.
- Use privacy zones where available, decide whether audio recording is justified and set a proportionate retention period.
- Use a unique account password, enable multi-factor authentication when offered and keep camera, app and router firmware current.
- Test a real local recording and export after setup; do not wait for an incident to discover that the card was missing or playback was disabled.
- Follow the updated UK government guidance on responsible domestic CCTV, especially where the camera captures beyond your property boundary.

We favoured usable local recording and transparent required hardware rather than treating every “no subscription” badge as equivalent.
