About Smart Home UK
Smart Home UK is an independent buying-guide and reviews site built specifically for the British market. We help UK homeowners cut through the marketing noise and choose smart home products that actually work in UK houses, on UK Wi-Fi, with UK energy tariffs and UK privacy law in mind.
Who We Are
We are a small editorial team based in Britain. We aren’t a retailer and we aren’t owned by a tech giant. Our work is funded by Amazon’s UK Associates programme — if you buy a product through one of our affiliate links, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Our full editorial policy explains how this is structured and why it doesn’t influence which products we recommend.
Why We Exist
Most smart home coverage online is US-centric. Reviewers tell you a thermostat “saves $180 a year” without checking whether it works with the S-Plan boiler in your loft. Doorbell roundups skip whether the camera is legal under UK GDPR if it captures the pavement. Best-of lists list products that aren’t even sold in pounds.
We exist to fix that. Every guide we publish is filtered through the question: “Does this make sense in a British home, on a British network, paying a British energy bill?”
What We Do
Our work falls into three categories:
- Buying guides: Curated “best of” lists for thermostats, video doorbells, security cameras, smart bulbs, robot vacuums, EV chargers, and more — each tailored to UK budgets, home types, and regulations.
- Hands-on reviews: We install and test devices in real UK homes where the testing meaningfully informs the recommendation. We are upfront in each article about whether the recommendation is hands-on or research-led. Our evaluation methodology explains how we score every product.
- Practical energy guidance: Advice on using technology to combat rising energy costs — from optimising heating schedules and reading smart-meter data to choosing EV-friendly tariffs.
UK-Focused Expertise
Everything we publish is written for the British home. We understand that:
- Thick brick and stone walls in older UK housing wreck 5 GHz Wi-Fi and force trade-offs that don’t exist in US ranch-style builds.
- UK boilers (S-Plan, Y-Plan, combi) need different thermostat configurations and not every “smart thermostat” supports all of them.
- UK doorbell wiring is typically 8 V AC mechanical; some popular wired video doorbells assume 16 V AC US wiring and won’t work without a transformer swap.
- UK GDPR and the ICO place specific limits on outdoor cameras and doorbells — products that violate these limits can land households with enforcement letters, regardless of how good the camera is.
- UK energy tariffs (price-capped, EV-specific, heat-pump-specific) change the maths on every “saves you money” claim.
You will not find Smart Home UK recommending products that need US power adapters, services that don’t support UK addresses, or thermostats that can’t talk to a typical British boiler.
Our Smart Home Savings Calculator
Helping readers save money is a core part of what we do. Our Smart Home Savings Calculator takes your current energy usage and home type and shows a realistic estimate of what you could save by switching to smart heating, intelligent lighting, and automated appliance scheduling. It’s designed to give you a transparent figure to test against the price tags of any products you’re considering.
Our Editorial Standards
We are independent and we publish honestly. We don’t accept payment for reviews or favourable placement. No manufacturer or retailer has editorial influence over what we write. If a product is excellent, we say why; if it isn’t worth the money, we say that too.
We use AI-assisted tools as part of our research and drafting workflow, like most modern publishers. Every article is reviewed and fact-checked by a human editor before publication, and every recommendation is verified against UK availability, pricing, and the specific UK-context criteria above. Read our full editorial policy and our product evaluation methodology for how we work in detail.
