About James Wright
Hi — I’m James Wright, founder and lead reviewer at Smart Home UK. I’ve been testing smart home technology in real British homes since 2024, with a focus on what actually works under UK conditions: combi boilers, draughty Victorian terraces, erratic Wi-Fi, and the quirks of UK energy tariffs.
What I test
- Smart heating — tado°, Hive, Drayton Wiser, Nest, and smart radiator valves tested with UK gas boilers and heat pumps
- Smart security — video doorbells, outdoor cameras, smart locks (insurance-compliant picks matter here)
- Energy-saving tech — smart plugs, energy monitors, Octopus Agile integrations
- Smart lighting — Philips Hue, LIFX, Tapo, and sub-£10 bulbs from UK retailers
- Voice assistants and ecosystems — Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Matter
How I evaluate products
Every recommendation on Smart Home UK follows a consistent UK-focused process:
- Research-led, hands-on where it matters — we evaluate manufacturer specifications, verified UK customer reviews from Amazon UK / Currys / John Lewis / Argos, and long-term threads in UK communities (r/UKsmarthome, r/HomeAssistantUK, Hive Community, Tado° Community). Where hands-on testing meaningfully informs the recommendation, we install and use the product in a UK home and clearly state that in the article.
- UK-specific compatibility checks — combi-boiler protocol support (S-Plan, Y-Plan), BS 1363 13A plug compliance, UK Wi-Fi bands, ICO-compliant data handling for cameras, Ofgem-tariff implications for energy-monitoring devices.
- UK pricing and stock — we list current UK street prices in pounds and flag when RRP drifts from real availability. We update prices on top guides every 30 days.
- Six-criteria scoring — UK compatibility, real-world reliability, privacy/ICO posture, ecosystem fit, total cost of ownership, setup and day-to-day usability. Full detail in our evaluation methodology.
- Editorial review and corrections — content is reviewed before publication; we update guides when products are discontinued, prices change materially, or specifications are revised, and we note material corrections.

Why independence matters
Smart Home UK takes zero sponsored placements. We earn a small commission when readers buy through our Amazon UK affiliate links, but product rankings are based on our own testing — not what pays best. Full details on our affiliate disclosure page.
Background
Smart Home UK was founded in 2024 out of frustration with smart-home reviews written by people who clearly hadn’t lived with the products. Too many UK buyers were sent to sites recommending US-only products, subscription-locked cameras, or thermostats incompatible with their boilers. We fix that.
