Last checked: 19 July 2026. A useful Ring alternative is not simply a cheaper camera with a doorbell button. Compare the exact power route, chime, owned storage, optional cloud, assistant support and total hardware required for the same household outcome.
Best current Ring alternatives
- Aqara Doorbell Camera Hub G410: the strongest all-round alternative for local storage, battery or wired power and broader Aqara hub functions.
- Aqara Doorbell Camera G400 Wired: the infrastructure choice for PoE or low-voltage power, continuous local recording and NAS/RTSP support.
- Tapo D235: a flexible battery-value candidate with local microSD recording, provided live UK stock is confirmed.
These are not feature-for-feature Ring clones. None should be assumed to reproduce Ring’s app, neighbourhood features, cloud history, plan entitlements or integration behaviour.
| Exact model | Why consider it instead of Ring | Required hardware | Cloud/subscription boundary | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara Doorbell Camera Hub G410 | microSD stored indoors; battery or wiring; Aqara hub roles | Included indoor chime; microSD card extra; suitable batteries or 12–24V supply | HomeGuardian optional; HomeKit Secure Video needs iCloud+ and Apple home hub | It is not a Matter camera and battery mode does not provide continuous recording |
| Aqara Doorbell Camera G400 Wired | PoE option, continuous local recording, NAS and RTSP | 802.3af PoE or 8–24V AC/DC; microSD/NAS as required | Optional Aqara cloud; HomeKit Secure Video has Apple requirements | No battery and no traditional chime support |
| Tapo D235 | 2K 5MP head-to-toe view, local storage and free on-device detection | microSD card; battery charging or suitable 8–24V wiring | Tapo Care optional for cloud history and selected enhanced notifications | Pre-roll/continuous recording on battery, 5GHz Wi-Fi or guaranteed current stock |
1. Aqara Doorbell Camera Hub G410: best overall alternative
The exact G410 uses a 2K, 175-degree, 4:3 view, mmWave presence sensing and local face recognition. It can run on six AA batteries or 12–24V AC/DC. Recordings can be stored on a microSD card up to 512GB in the indoor chime, keeping the card away from the front door; the card is not included.
Continuous recording and RTSP require hardwiring. HomeGuardian cloud is optional. HomeKit Secure Video requires iCloud+ and a compatible Apple home hub and applies a lower video-resolution ceiling. The G410 can serve as a Matter Controller, Thread Border Router and Aqara Zigbee hub, but the camera itself is not native Matter video.
Buy it if: you want owned local footage and flexible installation, especially in an Aqara or Apple household.
Skip it if: you need continuous video on battery power, a traditional Ring-like cloud workflow or native Matter camera streaming.

2. Aqara Doorbell Camera G400 Wired: best PoE alternative
The exact G400 Wired provides a 2K portrait 3:4 view, IP65 housing and local person/motion detection. IEEE 802.3af PoE can carry both power and data; the alternative is 8–24V AC/DC power with dual-band Wi-Fi 6. There is no battery configuration.
It supports microSD cards up to 512GB, continuous recording, NAS transfer and RTSP. Aqara says it does not work with a traditional chime, so the alert plan must use its supported indoor/app/ecosystem route. It should not be described as a native Matter camera.
Buy it if: a renovation or existing network makes PoE practical and local/NAS recording is more important than battery convenience.
Skip it if: you cannot run cable, require an existing mechanical chime, or want a reversible renter installation.

3. Tapo D235: best battery-value candidate
The exact Tapo D235 offers a 2K 5MP head-to-toe view, a 10,000mAh rechargeable battery or 8–24V hardwiring, and an IP66 specification. It is a 2.4GHz-only Wi-Fi product. Person, pet, vehicle and package detection run on-device without a required paid detection tier.
Local recording uses a microSD card up to 512GB. Tapo Care is optional for cloud history and some enhanced notifications. Pre-roll and continuous recording require hardwiring, so do not compare a battery installation with a permanently powered Ring camera as though their capture behaviour were identical. Official UK availability is established, but stock varied during research and must be rechecked.
Buy it if: you want local storage and a broad doorstep view while keeping battery installation available.
Skip it if: your door has weak 2.4GHz coverage, you need pre-roll on battery or current UK stock is not available.

Compare against the Ring outcome you actually use
- Recorded history: decide whether you need owned local media, off-site cloud history or both.
- Power: battery is easier to fit; wiring or PoE enables more reliable power and, on supported models, continuous recording.
- Alerts and chimes: include the indoor chime, speaker or phone path rather than assuming an existing mechanical chime works.
- Smart-home platform: verify the exact controller, home hub and paid account required for Apple, Alexa or Google features.
- Three-year ownership: include storage cards, hubs, transformers, installation, battery replacement/charging and optional cloud—not just the doorbell.
Installation, privacy and security warnings
Check an existing transformer’s label and capacity before connecting new hardware. Use a suitably qualified electrician for fixed-wiring changes and a properly specified PoE switch or injector for Ethernet power. Position the camera to minimise unnecessary recording of neighbours and public space, enable account security controls, apply firmware updates and choose an endurance-rated card for continuous video.
How we researched these alternatives
This is a research-led comparison, not a Smart Home UK head-to-head test. We reviewed current manufacturer specifications, launch/support documentation and UK availability evidence on 19 July 2026. We compared exact model, power, local storage, optional cloud, platform requirements and installation dependencies. We excluded temporary prices and did not infer parity from a shared feature name.

Frequently asked questions
Which Ring alternative has no required subscription?
All three can use local recording without a compulsory cloud plan when configured with the required storage and power. Optional services and ecosystem subscriptions still exist.
Which model is best for PoE?
The Aqara G400 Wired supports IEEE 802.3af PoE. Verify the switch/injector standard, cable route and the doorbell’s lack of traditional-chime support.
Will my old UK doorbell wiring work?
Do not assume it will. Check voltage and power requirements against the transformer label and obtain competent electrical advice where fixed wiring must change.
