UK verdict: Zigbee and Matter are not direct replacements for one another. Keep a dependable Zigbee network when it already serves the home, and add Matter where an exact certified product improves cross-ecosystem control. Choose the controller, bridge, Thread-border-router and end-device roles before buying.

Map the roles before choosing products
A Zigbee coordinator forms and manages its Zigbee network. A Matter controller commissions and controls supported Matter devices. A Thread border router routes a Thread mesh to the household IP network. A Matter bridge can expose supported devices from another protocol. An end device is the light, sensor, plug, thermostat or other controlled product. One physical hub may perform several roles, but a product page mentioning one role does not prove the others.
Draw the intended route for each device: end device, native radio, coordinator or border router, Matter controller and the app used by the household. That prevents a common purchasing error—buying a Thread accessory because a home contains a Zigbee hub, or buying a Matter controller and assuming it also coordinates arbitrary Zigbee devices.

When Zigbee is the better fit
Zigbee remains a sensible choice for a mature lighting or sensor network managed by a supported hub. The practical questions are whether the exact device is supported by the chosen coordinator, whether its useful functions are exposed and whether the network has suitable router placement.
Avoid choosing “generic Zigbee” without checking the coordinator and software. Cross-brand support can vary even when the radio protocol matches. A manufacturer hub may provide a simpler supported experience, while Home Assistant users may deliberately choose a broader coordinator and accept more responsibility for firmware, backups and device pairing.
When Matter is the better fit
Matter is useful when an exact certified device class is supported by the intended ecosystems and the household values multi-admin or a more portable commissioning route. It is not proof of identical features in Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings or another platform. Manufacturer-only settings may remain in the native app.
For Matter over Thread, confirm both the Matter controller and Thread border router. For Matter over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, confirm the controller and network route. Then check the platform version and device-class support. Matter 1.6 is the current specification, but products and platforms in this guide range from Matter 1.1 to 1.5.1 or do not publish an exact implementation version. “Matter compatible” is too broad to answer those questions.
Current bridge example: Aqara Hub M200
The exact Aqara Hub M200 shows how Zigbee and Matter can coexist without becoming the same protocol. Aqara Zigbee devices still communicate over their Zigbee network to the M200. For supported products, the M200 can expose functions through its Matter bridge. The end device does not become a native Matter or Thread device.
Aqara’s official Hub M200 specification and manual list Matter-controller, bridge and Thread-border-router roles, dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet/PoE, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Thread and infrared. The exact HM-G03E end-product certificate records firmware 4.0.4 and Matter 1.1; the separate Aqara Hub Platform certificate records firmware 1.0.0.0 and Matter 1.4. A USB 5V/2A power supply is not included unless PoE is used.
Buy it if: you are building around supported Aqara Zigbee devices and want one current hub to add Matter-controller, bridge and Thread-border-router roles.
Skip it if: you need a general-purpose coordinator for arbitrary Zigbee brands, Z-Wave, or identical bridged features across every ecosystem.

Ownership cost
Use the same three-year basis for every route: hardware + required hub or storage + installation + 36-month subscription + mandatory consumables. Show a free/core route separately from optional paid services. A lower-cost end device is not cheaper if it forces an unnecessary second hub; an existing compatible controller or bridge should not be counted as a fresh purchase.

- Hue A60 1100: £54.99 bulb-only Bluetooth route; £144.98 with Bridge Pro for full Hue and bridged-Matter functions, before a receiving controller not already owned.
- Aqara M200: €69.99 EU plus required power supply unless PoE is used; GBP/UK warranty route unresolved.
- Required subscriptions: £0 for these core device routes. Optional platform/cloud services must be costed separately when they supply a feature being compared.
There is also a maintenance cost: firmware, configuration backups, replacement after failure and rebuilding automations. Home Assistant users should keep coordinator and software backups, while vendor-hub users should review account recovery and the manufacturer’s migration route.
Migration without breaking a working home
- Inventory every end device, its native protocol, coordinator, controller, bridge and automation.
- Identify which functions must remain available locally or through physical controls.
- Add the new controller, bridge or border router before removing the old one.
- Move a small non-essential room first and verify pairing, scenes and documented recovery behaviour.
- Retain a rollback record until the entire intended route has operated as expected.
Do not replace a working Zigbee network solely to obtain a Matter label. Bridging may offer the cross-ecosystem control the household needs without repairing every device. A bridge does not change the native radio, and it may not expose every manufacturer feature.
Local control, reliability and privacy checks

Where recovery behaviour is not published, the status is not published—not tested by Smart Home UK. Do not substitute protocol theory for a manufacturer statement or first-party test.
- Place coordinators and border routers away from obvious radio interference and poor-signal cupboards.
- Keep manual controls for essential lighting, heating and security.
- Review the accounts and household permissions used by every exposed ecosystem.
- Remove former household members and retain secure commissioning codes and backups.
Verdict
Choose an exact device and verify the controller, border router, bridge, end-device role, native or bridged route, device-class support and local or cloud behaviour for the household. Matter does not guarantee hub-free use or complete feature parity across every platform. Zigbee does not guarantee arbitrary cross-brand support simply because two products share the protocol name.
