The meaningful figure is the complete safe installation, not a charger-only shelf price. Two homes using the same chargepoint can need very different cable routes, protective equipment, civil work, network changes and load management.

Who is ready to request quotes?

Request quotes when the parking space and cable route are known, the property owner or leaseholder permissions are available, the vehicle and charging pattern are understood, and an installer can inspect the electrical supply. A home with solar, a battery or a time-of-use tariff should document those systems rather than asking for a vague “future-ready” add-on.

Delay the project if there is no lawful off-street or approved cross-pavement charging route, landlord/freeholder consent is unresolved, the consumer unit or earthing needs investigation, mobile or Wi-Fi coverage is essential but untested, or the quote depends on a grant for which eligibility has not been confirmed.

Electrical and installer boundary

An EV chargepoint is fixed high-power electrical equipment. Use a competent installer who follows current UK electrical requirements and the chargepoint manufacturer’s instructions. The installer—not a generic online calculator—must assess supply capacity, protection, earthing, cable sizing and load management for the property.

Get comparable written quotes

Give each installer the same information and require the same scope. The quote should name the exact charger, cable length and route, electrical protections, load-management equipment, network connection, civil work, making good, commissioning, certification or notification, warranty, VAT and exclusions.

Ask what event can change the price after work begins. Common unknowns include concealed cable routes, inadequate supply capacity, earthing findings, difficult ground work and network signal. A survey-based quote is easier to compare than a low “standard installation” headline with broad exclusions.

Whole-system and ownership cost

Include any subscription, data connection, replacement tethered cable, support after changing broadband, load-management sensor, solar/battery integration and electrician call-out outside warranty. Confirm which useful functions continue if the manufacturer’s cloud or app is unavailable.

Do not claim a tariff saving without the vehicle’s measured kWh, actual charging times and applicable import rates. A charger can schedule energy use; it does not guarantee that the vehicle, tariff or household will achieve a particular cost.

Solar, battery and tariff compatibility

“Solar compatible” can mean several different things: reading surplus generation, limiting grid import, receiving data from a specific inverter, or simply allowing a user-created schedule. Require the installer to state the supported configuration for the exact charger, inverter, battery and meter arrangement.

For time-of-use charging, confirm whether scheduling lives in the car, charger, energy supplier or more than one place. Avoid conflicting schedules. Decide which system is authoritative and test a short session before relying on overnight charging.

Handover and practical checks

  • Keep the final invoice, certificate, circuit details, installer contact and warranty.
  • Record charger serial/model information privately and save account-recovery steps.
  • Test manual start/stop, scheduled charging and load management with the actual vehicle.
  • Confirm cable storage does not create a trip or vehicle-damage risk.
  • Check household instructions for an app, internet or charger fault.
  • Document who handles future broadband, tariff, solar, battery or vehicle changes.
