Google Nest Thermostat UK 2026: 3rd Gen, E and 4th Gen

For a UK boiler, “Nest thermostat” must mean the complete regional system, not only the display. The European 3rd-generation Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E use model-specific Heat Link hardware. The North American 4th-generation thermostat is not a normal UK Heat Link replacement and should not be treated as the current default for a British heating system.

Google documents the model-specific Heat Links in its European Heat Link guide, the separate-cylinder boundary in its hot-water programmer guidance, and the regional hardware difference in its Europe versus North America comparison.

Who should still consider the European 3rd generation?

It can be a rational replacement or continuity choice for a compatible UK home that already has documented Nest wiring, wants combined heating and supported cylinder scheduling, or values keeping an existing Google/Nest control route. The decisive evidence is the boiler and hot-water layout plus the exact Heat Link—not a familiar circular display.

Avoid buying until an installer has identified multi-zone controls, proprietary boiler communications, shared or communal heating, underfloor control centres and any non-standard cylinder arrangement. A used display without the correct Heat Link is not a complete heating system. Confirm account transfer, warranty and replacement-part support when buying older hardware.

When Thermostat E fits

Thermostat E is the simpler, combi-focused European route. Its Heat Link E normally takes the place of the existing wired room thermostat, while the display is freestanding. It is unsuitable when the purchase objective is to schedule a separate stored-hot-water cylinder through Nest.

Do not call it “DIY” merely because its physical arrangement can be simpler. The existing control, voltage, wiring and boiler compatibility must still be understood. Use a suitably qualified professional if the circuit or heating system is uncertain.

Components and installed cost

Price the matching thermostat and Heat Link, a stand if needed, professional survey and wiring, any remedial work, and the risk and availability of legacy replacement parts. If an existing Heat Link has failed, identify its exact generation before ordering another display or relay unit. Google’s instructions treat each thermostat and Heat Link as a matched model family.

There is no thermostat subscription for core scheduling and control. That does not make ownership cost zero: installation, support life, failed-part replacement and the time needed to reconfigure accounts or integrations still matter.

Installation and commissioning

The European 3rd-generation Heat Link interfaces with heating and potentially hot-water controls. Google recommends professional installation for this route. The installer should record the boiler terminals, relay or OpenTherm connection, cylinder control, motorised valves, existing programmer functions and how manual heat will be restored if the thermostat or account is unavailable.

Commission heating and hot water separately. Check schedules, manual Heat Link operation, thermostat location, Wi-Fi/account recovery and the behaviour after an internet interruption. Do not discard the previous wiring diagram or programmer details until normal operation has been proven.

Upgrade and migration decision

An older supported Nest system does not automatically need replacement. Keep it if it remains compatible, secure, serviceable and understandable to the household. Consider migration when essential parts are unavailable, the heating system is changing, hot-water or zoning requirements are no longer met, or support risk outweighs the benefit of continuity.

Pre-purchase checks

  • Confirm the thermostat is a UK/European model with its correct Heat Link.
  • Identify combi or stored-hot-water operation and every heating zone.
  • Confirm relay, OpenTherm or another control method for the exact boiler.
  • Check what is included, especially Heat Link, stand and wiring accessories.
  • Document installer, support, warranty and account-transfer arrangements.
  • Reject the North American 4th generation as a drop-in UK Heat Link replacement.
