This research-led guide does not claim hands-on testing or a guaranteed saving. An energy monitor makes consumption visible; it does not reduce energy use by itself.

Choose the data source before the device

Ofgem explains its role in supplier and Data Communications Company obligations on the smart-meter regulation page. A third-party service’s claim of smart-meter compatibility should still be checked against the household’s actual meter and consent route.

Who should buy a separate monitor?

Buy when there is a defined question: identifying overnight baseload, measuring one appliance, separating EV charging, checking solar self-consumption or evaluating a schedule change. Decide in advance which reading will answer it and how long the baseline will run.

Avoid or delay when an existing in-home display, supplier portal, inverter or charger already provides the necessary data. Also avoid buying if nobody will review the information, the system cannot export the required history, or installation would enter fixed electrical equipment without a competent installer.

Installation boundary

A plug-level monitor must be suitable for the appliance and its load. Do not use a generic monitor to interrupt equipment that must remain powered or a load the manufacturer does not permit. A whole-home clamp or fixed monitor can involve the consumer unit, meter tails or circuits; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use a competent, suitably qualified electrician wherever fixed electrical access or wiring is required.

Never remove meter seals or interfere with supplier/network equipment. If the smart meter or in-home display is not working, start with the energy supplier’s support route rather than modifying the metering installation.

Measure one change fairly

  1. Record at least four comparable weeks before changing anything.
  2. Describe the intervention precisely: schedule, set-point, appliance replacement or behaviour.
  3. Keep other major changes separate where possible.
  4. Record occupancy, weather or EV use that could distort the comparison.
  5. Compare kWh first, then apply the household’s actual tariff.

The calculation is measured kWh avoided × current unit rate. Standing charges are not avoided. At Ofgem’s July–September 2026 average direct-debit electricity unit rate, an evidenced 100 kWh annual reduction equates to £26.11, but the household’s actual rate may differ by region, payment method and tariff. Accuracy and interpretation

Compare a monitor’s total with the billing meter over a sensible period, allowing for different update intervals and rounding. Treat appliance-disaggregation labels as estimates unless the system directly measures a dedicated circuit or plug. A plausible appliance icon is not proof that the algorithm identified the load correctly.

For solar and batteries, define import, export, generation, charge and discharge consistently. Two portals can disagree because they sample at different intervals or place sensors at different points. Use one documented source for each calculation.

Privacy, access and ownership cost

Check data granularity, retention, export format, third-party sharing, account deletion, household permissions and what remains available if the cloud service closes. Ofgem and DESNZ describe wider smart-meter data access as consented in their 2026 data-access work; read the service’s own terms before granting access.

Include hardware, electrician work, subscription, replacement sensors and the cost of losing historical data. Prefer a route that answers the defined question without creating another unnecessary account.

Practical checklist

  • Name the decision the data will support.
  • Confirm meter, tariff, inverter, charger or appliance compatibility.
  • Set safe electrical and load boundaries before installation.
  • Require usable history and export, not only a live gauge.
  • Record privacy, deletion and cloud-outage behaviour.
  • Measure kWh before converting it to pounds.
