A smart electric heater is an electric heater with app, schedule or voice control. Connectivity can make one room easier to manage, but it does not make resistance heating intrinsically cheaper. The meaningful differences are safe installation, control quality, comfort, noise, support and whether the schedule actually prevents unnecessary heating.

Work out running cost first

Use the rated electrical input, the time the element actually draws power and the household’s electricity unit rate:

input in kW × powered hours × unit rate = running cost

A 2 kW heater drawing full power for one hour uses 2 kWh. A thermostat may cycle the element after the room warms, so actual consumption depends on heat loss, outside temperature, room size, set-point, occupancy and control accuracy. Use the tariff shown on the bill rather than a generic online figure.

Choose the heater type for the job

Smart controls worth paying for

Prioritise an accurate thermostat, clear manual controls, usable schedules, visible operating status and safe behaviour after power or internet loss. Open-window logic, child-lock options and remote access may be useful, but only when the household understands their limits.

Check whether schedules remain on the heater or depend on the cloud, whether an account or separate hub is required, and how the heater can be switched off without a phone. A voice assistant should never be the only control for a heating appliance.

Who should buy a smart electric heater?

It can suit a small, occasionally used room; a defined supplementary-heating need; or a space where a safe schedule replaces unreliable manual switching. The project should have a clear room, time window and comfort objective.

Avoid treating portable electric heaters as an unplanned whole-home system. Delay if the room has damp or insulation problems that need diagnosis, the socket or circuit condition is uncertain, the heater would sit near curtains or bedding, or the only available route uses an improvised extension lead or generic smart plug.

Electrical safety and installation

Follow the manufacturer’s clearance, mounting and bathroom-zone instructions. Keep portable heaters away from curtains, bedding, furniture and drying clothes. Do not defeat tip-over or overheat protection. Check the lead, plug and socket for damage or heat and stop using equipment showing a fault.

High-load appliances can overload extension equipment. Electrical Safety First’s extension-lead safety guidance warns against exceeding the lead or adaptor rating and against daisy chaining. Prefer the manufacturer’s approved connection method; do not add a generic smart plug unless both products explicitly permit the load and use.

Fixed wall wiring, a new circuit or an uncertain supply should be assessed by a competent, suitably qualified electrician. HSE guidance also emphasises matching equipment to the supply and taking damaged or unsafe wiring out of use in its electrical-equipment guidance.

Whole-system ownership cost

Compare heater hardware, wall-mounting or electrician work, required hub, optional subscription, account/cloud dependence and expected support. If several rooms need electric heat, price the complete electrical load and control design rather than multiplying one portable-heater estimate.

Residual warmth from an oil-filled radiator or fast warm-up from a fan heater changes comfort and timing, not the basic cost of each kWh consumed. A smart schedule can save only by reducing powered time or set-point compared with what would otherwise happen.

Support and practical checks

  • Match heater type and manufacturer sizing guidance to one defined room.
  • Calculate several duty-cycle scenarios using the household tariff.
  • Confirm thermostat, schedule, manual-off and offline behaviour.
  • Check mounting, clearance, bathroom and socket requirements.
  • Review app updates, account recovery, warranty and spare-part support.
  • Keep the heater away from combustible material and do not use it to dry clothes.
  • Use an electrician for fixed wiring or an uncertain circuit.
