The best smart bulb is not simply the brightest or cheapest one. For most UK homes, the more important choice is the system behind it: whether the bulb still responds when the internet is down, what hardware is needed for automations, which wall controls work, and how much a room or whole home costs to equip.

Short answer: choose Hue when dependable accessories and a mature multi-room system matter most; Tapo when you want a capable E27 Wi-Fi bulb without a proprietary lighting bridge; IKEA when the fitting and Thread setup suit your room; and Nanoleaf only after confirming whether the exact bulb uses Thread or Wi-Fi.
Philips Hue: best for a complete lighting system
The checked Hue A60 E27 1100 bulb is rated at 1,100 lumens and 8.1 W, with a stated 1,000–20,000 K colour-temperature range and a two-year warranty. It can be set up over Bluetooth, but the bridge is what turns Hue into a stronger whole-home system: local Zigbee communication, accessories, routines and Matter exposure to compatible platforms.
Buy Hue if: you expect to add several rooms, physical remotes, motion sensors or outdoor lights and value one mature lighting system. Avoid it if: you need only one or two basic bulbs and would resent paying separately for a bridge. Compare the whole room cost, not the first-bulb price.
Hue Bridge v2 or Bridge Pro?
The standard white Hue Bridge remains the proportionate choice for a smaller existing system: Hue lists capacity for up to 50 lights and 12 accessories. The newer Hue Bridge Pro raises the stated capacity to 150 lights and 50 accessories, can connect by Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and adds MotionAware, which uses compatible Hue lights as motion-sensing inputs. Both routes keep Zigbee between the bridge and bulbs and expose supported Hue devices to Matter through the bridge; neither converts legacy bulbs into native Thread or native Matter devices.
Choose Bridge Pro if: the planned installation approaches the standard bridge limits, needs many controls, or MotionAware is a genuine requirement. Keep or buy Bridge v2 if: the system is comfortably below those limits. Do not replace a functioning bridge merely because Pro is newer; confirm the official migration process and any feature-specific compatibility first.
Tapo L535E: best when you do not want a proprietary lighting bridge
TP-Link lists the Tapo L535E at 1,055 lumens and 8.6 W, with a 2,500–6,500 K white range. It uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and supports Matter, while Bluetooth assists setup. The bulb does not need a Tapo Hub for control in the Tapo app.
That does not make every broader setup hub-free. Adding the bulb to another Matter platform still requires a suitable controller, and some Tapo buttons or sensors have their own hub requirements. Buy it if: you want a bright E27 bulb and already have reliable 2.4 GHz coverage. Avoid it if: your Wi-Fi is congested or you plan a very large lighting installation where a dedicated low-power mesh may be easier to manage.
IKEA KAJPLATS: best-value Thread starter where GU10 fits
The checked IKEA KAJPLATS starter kit includes three GU10 white-spectrum bulbs and a remote. IKEA describes the range as Matter compatible and the bulbs use Matter over Thread. The remote offers a straightforward route to local direct control; integration with an app or another ecosystem requires the appropriate Matter controller and Thread border router.
IKEA’s GB page showed conflicting 575-lumen and 470-lumen references when checked, so this guide does not present one output figure as settled. Buy the kit if: you need GU10 spots, like a supplied physical control and already have—or plan to add—a Thread-capable home platform. Avoid it if: you need B22 or E27 bulbs, or want app control without checking controller compatibility first.
Nanoleaf Essentials: check the radio before buying
Nanoleaf’s UK selector contains multiple Essentials A60/E27 bulb variants. The important distinction is not visible from the family name alone: one product can use Matter over Thread while another uses Matter over Wi-Fi. Output and wattage can also vary by SKU.
Buy a Thread version if: you already have a compatible Thread border router and want to extend a Thread mesh. Consider a Wi-Fi version if: you prefer to avoid a Thread dependency and have suitable 2.4 GHz coverage. In either case, record the exact model from the box or retailer listing before purchase rather than assuming every Essentials bulb behaves identically.
Do smart bulbs need a hub?
Hub-free is an imprecise marketing shortcut. It can mean that the manufacturer’s app connects directly, not that every voice assistant, automation or local-control feature works with no other hardware.
- Zigbee: normally needs a compatible coordinator or bridge. Hue’s bridge coordinates its Zigbee lighting network.
- Matter over Thread: needs a Matter controller and a Thread border router for platform control. One device, such as a compatible home hub, may provide both roles.
- Matter over Wi-Fi: needs a Matter controller but not a Thread border router. The bulb still relies on the quality and capacity of the home Wi-Fi network.
- Bluetooth: can simplify nearby setup or basic direct control, but usually offers less range and fewer whole-home features than a bridge or home platform.

Check the fitting and wall control first
Common UK fittings include B22 bayonet, E27 screw and GU10 spotlight. Do not assume an attractive offer is available in the fitting already installed, and check shade clearance as well as the cap.
A smart bulb needs continuous power to receive commands. A traditional wall switch can therefore make the bulb appear offline. Conventional electronic dimmers can also cause flicker, buzzing or unreliable operation and should not be used unless the bulb maker explicitly supports that arrangement. Prefer a compatible wireless remote, a wall control designed for smart-bulb mode, or an electrician-approved solution. Never work on fixed wiring unless qualified to do so.
Brightness, white range and colour
Lumens describe light output; watts describe electrical input. For a main-room bulb, compare lumens rather than relying on phrases such as “60 W equivalent”. Warm white suits relaxed evening light, while a wider tunable-white range is more useful in kitchens, home offices and routines that change through the day.
Colour capability costs more and is not essential in every fitting. A sensible mixed installation may use colour bulbs in feature lamps and cheaper tunable-white bulbs for general lighting. For worktops and reading areas, beam direction, lampshade design and colour rendering can matter as much as the headline lumen figure.
Calculate the real system cost
Price a representative room before committing to an ecosystem:
- the correct number and fitting of bulbs;
- any bridge, Matter controller or Thread border router not already owned;
- physical switches or remotes so visitors can operate the lights;
- motion sensors where automation is genuinely useful; and
- replacement cost if a proprietary platform is discontinued.
A cheaper bulb can become the expensive choice if it needs extra infrastructure or weak Wi-Fi causes repeated troubleshooting. Conversely, a premium bridge is difficult to justify for a single bedside lamp.
Reliability and privacy checks
Before buying several bulbs, install one in the hardest-to-reach intended room and verify setup, range, recovery after a power cut and physical-switch behaviour. Check whether schedules run locally or depend on a cloud service, whether household members can be invited without sharing one password, and how security updates are delivered.

UK verdict
Hue remains the strongest choice for a broad, accessory-rich lighting system. Tapo L535E is the clearer hub-free E27 option when strong Wi-Fi and Matter suit the home. IKEA KAJPLATS offers an unusually accessible route into GU10 Thread lighting, subject to controller and output checks. Nanoleaf Essentials can fit a Matter-first setup, but the exact Thread or Wi-Fi SKU must be locked before comparing it.
Buy one bulb first, test it in the intended room, and expand only when the fitting, controls, connectivity and household experience all work as expected.
