Do smart bulbs need a hub?

Hub-free can mean only that the manufacturer’s app connects directly. A Hue bulb needs a Hue bridge for the full system and Matter exposure. A Matter-over-Thread bulb needs a compatible controller and Thread border router for ecosystem control. A Matter-over-Wi-Fi bulb needs a controller but not a Thread border router. Tapo accessories such as buttons and sensors can still require a Tapo Hub even though the L535E bulb itself does not.

Fittings and wall controls

Check B22, E27 or GU10 before ordering. Do not put a smart bulb on an incompatible traditional wall dimmer. Leave the lamp circuit powered and use a compatible wireless control, a smart switch designed for smart-bulb mode, or an electrician-approved solution.

UK verdict

Choose Hue for the broadest mature lighting system, Tapo L535E for a bright Wi-Fi/Matter bulb without a proprietary lighting bridge, IKEA KAJPLATS for a low-cost Thread starter where the GU10 format fits, and Nanoleaf only after locking the exact Thread or Wi-Fi SKU. Products without current official UK sales, voltage, warranty and support evidence are not ranked here.
