UK verdict: choose the lighting system around fittings, wall controls and controller requirements before choosing a brand. A cheap first bulb can become an expensive room if it needs a separate bridge, border router, remote or replacement switch. A more established bridged system can cost more at the start but may be easier to expand consistently.

Start with the room, not the app
List every lamp and ceiling fitting in the first room. Record whether it uses B22, E27 or GU10, whether it sits behind a traditional dimmer and whether anyone still needs a familiar wall control. Also note shades that restrict bulb size or ventilation. This simple inventory prevents a mixed basket of incompatible fittings and avoids assuming that every bulb sold under one family has the same radio or light output.
Do not put a smart bulb on an incompatible traditional wall dimmer. Keep the circuit powered and use a compatible wireless control, a supported smart-bulb mode, or an electrician-approved solution. For a hallway, landing or guest room, a reliable physical control usually matters more than elaborate scenes.
Understand the controller roles
Hue does not use Matter over Thread: Hue lamps use Zigbee and a Hue bridge can expose supported devices to Matter. A Matter controller is the ecosystem device that commissions and controls Matter accessories. A Thread border router is additionally required for a Matter-over-Thread bulb. Those roles may be combined in one household device, but the presence of one role does not prove the other.
Before buying, write down the intended control route: native app, Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant or a combination. Then verify the exact bulb, controller and border-router path. “Matter compatible” is not a substitute for that check, and it does not guarantee identical scenes, effects or firmware controls in every ecosystem. Compare the complete ownership cost
Price the first useful room rather than one bulb. Include the exact number of bulbs, any bridge or border router you do not already own, physical remotes, compatible switches and replacement fittings. For decorative installations, include diffusers, extension leads or an electrician only where they are genuinely required. Do not use a temporary sale price to declare a permanent winner.
Running costs also include time: account recovery, firmware updates, replacing a failed lamp and rebuilding scenes after a controller change. A household already committed to one ecosystem may gain more from buying a compatible addition than from starting a second lighting network to save a small amount on a bulb.
Reliability, privacy and household access
- Offline behaviour: confirm what the bulb, bridge and physical control do when broadband or a vendor cloud is unavailable.
- Power recovery: choose the desired behaviour after a power cut so bedrooms and hallways do not unexpectedly illuminate.
- Household control: make sure other occupants can use the lights without borrowing the purchaser’s phone or account.
- Updates: check how bulb, bridge and controller firmware is delivered and whether an account is mandatory.
- Network load: consider whether adding many direct-Wi-Fi bulbs is appropriate for the household router, rather than treating radio choice as a feature-sheet contest.
Who should buy or avoid each approach?
Choose a bridged Zigbee system when
You want a coherent multi-room lighting network, dedicated wireless controls and one bridge managing many lamps. Avoid it if the extra bridge, account and higher complete-room cost do not add useful value to a small installation.
Choose direct Wi-Fi when
You need only a few exact bulbs and have confirmed app, router and ecosystem support. Avoid expanding it casually across a large property until you have considered household control, internet failure and router capacity.
Choose Matter over Thread when
You already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router, and the exact bulb fitting and device features are supported by the intended ecosystem. Avoid buying on the Matter label alone when the controller roles or exact UK SKU remain unclear.
Build a sensible first room
- Pick one room with a clear use case, such as scheduled bedside lamps or a hallway scene.
- Confirm every fitting, switch and dimmer before ordering.
- Choose one controller path and one physical-control fallback.
- Add the exact products, update them and test ordinary on/off use before building complex automations.
- Only then repeat the pattern elsewhere.
