Wiser 2nd Generation is a family of HubR configurations rather than one universal thermostat. The correct starting point is the property’s heating and hot-water channel layout. App features and radiator zoning come later.

Drayton’s official 2nd Generation range page describes the 1 Channel model for combi boilers by OpenTherm or relay, the 2 Channel model for heating plus a separate cylinder, and the 3 Channel model for two heating zones and hot water. Use its current installation documentation for the exact part number rather than relying on a retailer’s generic kit name.
What a complete Wiser system contains
The HubR is the fixed-wiring control point. A room thermostat supplies a representative room temperature, while optional Wiser radiator thermostats can create room schedules within the supported system. Extra sensors or smart-home modules are separate expansion decisions; do not include them merely because the app can support them.
Before ordering, draw the existing programmer terminals, boiler, cylinder thermostat, motorised valves and any separate heating zones. Note whether the current control uses simple relay switching or a supported modulating interface. If these details are unclear, an installer survey is more valuable than buying the largest kit.
Who should buy—and who should avoid?
Wiser is a strong fit when the home’s one-, two- or three-channel layout is known and the buyer wants a manufacturer-supported route from central control to optional room zoning without a mandatory subscription for core use. It also suits households that want physical room control alongside an app.
Avoid buying until the system is mapped if there are multiple heating zones, underfloor controls, non-standard boiler communications, communal heating or a heat pump with specialist controls. Also pause if the plan depends on mixing generations or assuming every Wiser-branded add-on works with every HubR. Drayton distinguishes its generations; verify the exact generation of the hub and each expansion device.
Installation and electrician boundary
The HubR interfaces with fixed heating-control wiring. Installation should be handled by someone competent and suitably qualified who follows the current Drayton instructions and applicable electrical requirements. A familiar backplate does not remove the need to identify every conductor, isolate safely and commission each heating and hot-water function.
Commissioning should prove more than app connectivity. Check that each heating zone calls correctly, hot water follows its schedule, manual override works, valves fail safely, and the household knows how to operate the system if broadband or the app is unavailable.
Whole-system cost and ownership
Compare the HubR kit, installer labour, room thermostat count, radiator thermostats, any valve-body work, range-extending equipment and future battery replacement. A low starter-kit price can be misleading if the intended result requires a valve in many rooms. Conversely, a household may need only the correctly matched HubR and one room thermostat.
Do not convert a manufacturer saving claim into a household forecast. Any outcome depends on the previous controls, schedules, temperatures, insulation, occupancy and weather. Measure heating energy before and after one documented change if savings are part of the business case.
Support and migration plan
Keep the HubR part number, wiring diagram, installer certificate or commissioning record, room assignments and account-recovery details. Before replacing a first-generation component, confirm whether the change is an add-on or a wider migration. Do not dispose of the old programmer or wiring notes until heating and hot water have been proven through normal operation.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Identify combi, stored-hot-water or multi-zone operation.
- Count controlled channels from the wiring and valves, not from the number of radiators.
- Confirm relay or supported OpenTherm control for the exact 1 Channel installation.
- Check the HubR and every add-on are from a compatible generation.
- Price the complete room-zoning plan, installation and batteries.
- Specify manual fallback, account recovery and future support needs.
