Safety first: a robot window cleaner remains attached to glass by powered suction or another model-specific mechanism. It is not a safe workaround for leaning from a window, reaching over a balcony or working beneath a drop. If attachment, tethering or retrieval cannot be completed from a stable protected position, use a professional window cleaner. UK verdict: consider one only for large, reachable panes that match the exact model’s glazing requirements and have a secure tether point. Small panes, awkward frames, damaged glass, uncertain coatings and inaccessible exterior faces are reasons to avoid it.

Screen out unsuitable windows

Inspect the pane from a safe position. Record its width and height, frame depth, joints, seals, handles, vents and anything that interrupts a flat route. Compare these details with the exact manual, including minimum pane size and framed or frameless restrictions. Do not place a robot on cracked, loose or damaged glazing.

Special coatings, patterned glass, films, very dirty surfaces and moisture can affect attachment or cleaning. Ask the glazing supplier and robot manufacturer whether the exact combination is supported. A general claim such as “works on most windows” is not enough for an elevated exterior pane.

Plan attachment and retrieval before power-on

Identify an approved tether point that is independent of the window cleaner and can take the load described by the manufacturer. Attach the safety tether in the stated order before putting the machine on the glass. Keep people, pets and property clear below, even when a tether is fitted.

The power cable must reach without being trapped in a closing sash, pulled across a sharp edge or joined through an unsuitable arrangement. Check what the backup battery actually does: it may keep the unit attached temporarily rather than continue cleaning. Know the audible or app warnings and the retrieval procedure before deliberately testing any failure mode allowed by the instructions.

Prepare pads and glass correctly

Loose grit can scratch glass or reduce pad grip. Follow the manual’s dry-preparation and pad-fitting procedure, and use only the permitted amount and type of cleaning fluid. A pad that is too wet, dirty, folded or incorrectly attached can change both cleaning and adhesion.

Large panes may need pad changes during a session. Work out how the machine will be stopped, isolated, retrieved and restarted without stretching or leaning. Wash or replace pads as instructed and keep a clean set ready. Do not assume a generic cloth or household chemical is safe for the robot, seals or glazing coating.

Navigation and edges

Edge detection is not evidence that every frameless pane or unusual frame is supported. Confirm how the exact model recognises boundaries, handles corners and responds to an obstruction. Decorative bars, deep seals and adjacent panes can create routes the navigation system was not designed for.

Supervise the entire cycle from a safe place. Stop if the cleaner slips, chatters, repeatedly loses its route, pulls its cable tight or leaves the supported pane. Do not use it in conditions excluded by the manufacturer, and do not operate on an exterior surface when wind, rain or temperature makes the task unsafe.

Total ownership cost

Price the robot, approved cleaning fluid, several sets of pads, replacement tether, power cable or adapter, backup-battery service and delivery for warranty repairs. Check whether pads and other consumables are available from a UK source and whether the battery is replaceable. A discounted machine is poor value if its safety parts cannot be replaced.

Also compare the time required to prepare, supervise and clean the robot with the price of a professional service. The commercial decision changes if only one awkward exterior window needs attention; buying a device does not remove the access problem.

Apps, privacy and manual fallback

Where a model has an app, establish whether it is required for basic operation, what permissions and account it needs, and whether another household member can stop the machine locally. Use a unique password and available account protection. Confirm that loss of Wi-Fi or the vendor service does not prevent safe local retrieval.

Who should buy or avoid?

Buy only when the panes are documented as compatible, attachment and retrieval are safe from inside or ground level, a proper anchor is available and somebody can supervise. A trial should begin on a large, low, accessible pane in accordance with the manual.

Avoid for damaged or uncertain glazing, tiny panes, surfaces broken by bars or vents, inaccessible exterior faces, missing tether points or any setup that requires leaning out.
