UK verdict: a smart tap timer can suit one simple hose zone, while a wired multi-zone controller is for an existing or planned irrigation system. Weather-aware scheduling is useful only when the plumbing, planting zones, override controls and failure behaviour are understood.

Map the garden before choosing a controller
List the lawn, beds, pots, greenhouse and any area that should not be watered. Note the water source, tap thread, hose route, pressure, flow and existing valves. Different plants, soil exposure and sprinkler heads can require different schedules, so avoid combining unlike areas simply to reduce the number of zones.
Run the existing system manually and look for leaks, blocked emitters, low pressure, overspray and runoff. A smart controller cannot repair poor pipework or make mismatched sprinkler heads distribute evenly. Correct the physical system first, then decide how many independently controlled zones are genuinely useful.
Tap timer or installed controller?
A tap timer is the least invasive route for a small garden. Confirm the exact adapter for the outdoor tap, permitted pressure and flow, hose connector, weather rating and whether a local button works without a phone. A multi-zone controller must match the existing solenoid valves and power arrangement. Record the controller’s supported valve voltage, transformer requirements, maximum zones, sensor inputs and enclosure location. Photograph and label every old wire before replacement. If mains power, unfamiliar low-voltage wiring or new plumbing is involved, use a competent installer and follow the manufacturer’s design.
Understand “weather-aware” watering
A forecast or local weather sensor can inform a schedule, but it does not prove that soil at every root zone is wet or dry. Verify the weather source, rain threshold, seasonal adjustment, optional sensor support and whether the controller explains why a run was skipped. Keep a manual override and know what the system does during an internet, cloud or power outage.
Water responsibly. Check current local restrictions, avoid watering already waterlogged soil, correct runoff and repair leaks promptly. - Fit approved backflow or isolation components where the plumbing design requires them.
- Keep controllers, power supplies and cable connections within their permitted location and weather exposure.

For an installed controller, ask whether the electrician or irrigation installer supports the complete system or only their part of it.
Do not pay for additional zones or smart-home integration without a use for them. A dependable manual timer can be the better fit for one small bed, while a carefully labelled multi-zone controller can reduce repeated adjustment in a larger established system.
Privacy, accounts and reliability
Check whether schedules run locally or depend on the vendor cloud, what garden and location data the app stores, and how another resident gets access. Use a unique password and available account protection. Confirm that local watering can be stopped if the account, phone, hub or broadband is unavailable. Who should buy or avoid?
Buy a tap timer when the hose setup is sound and the watering task is repetitive. Choose a multi-zone controller when each zone is mapped, valve compatibility is documented and the installation has a clear manual fallback.
