SHUK Editorial is the publication byline for Smart Home UK. Our current buying guides and compatibility tools are research-led: they compare public documentation to help UK households understand what a product needs, what it costs and where the evidence stops.
How the research works
We start with the exact UK model or bundle and the decision a reader needs to make. Manufacturer manuals, support pages, UK product listings and plan terms provide product evidence. Standards bodies and public authorities provide relevant certification, technical and regulatory context. A claim about one model, region or software version does not automatically apply to another.
The detailed comparison matrices record source links, check dates, available model or version details, dependencies and unresolved conflicts. The Compatibility Commons makes the published data and source ledger available to inspect and reuse.
AI and automation assist source discovery, organisation and drafting. Generated text is not a source, and agreement between several summaries is not independent confirmation.
What an evidence label means
- Manufacturer documentation: what the cited source says the exact product supports. This is not a SHUK performance measurement.
- Attributed independent evidence: a finding from an identified external source, with its relevant model, method, date and limitations. It is not presented as SHUK’s own test.
- Inference or calculation: a conclusion drawn from stated inputs or assumptions. The reasoning and limits should be visible.
- Unknown, conditional or conflicting: the available evidence does not settle the question. A missing figure is not zero, and an unlisted system is not presumed compatible.
Treat SHUK’s current buying guidance and tools as research-led. They do not establish SHUK installation, latency, offline, outage or long-term test results. A future SHUK testing claim would need to identify the exact product, dates, method and supporting records. Research-led guidance is not professional installation approval.
How we compare choices and costs
Recommendations explain the use case, required equipment and reasons a product may be unsuitable. We do not claim a universal scoring system or measured performance ranking where the evidence does not support one.
Our three-year cost method is hardware + required hub or storage + installation + 36-month subscription + mandatory consumables. Free/core and paid/comparable scenarios describe the outcome being compared and use the same billing basis across brands. Prices are dated; temporary offers are identified separately. An incomplete subtotal is not presented as a complete ownership price. The cost and compatibility tools keep unresolved inputs visible.
Updates, corrections and commercial links
A source-check date describes the evidence observed on that date, not a promise that a product or plan is unchanged today. Material corrections should identify what changed and why. The data catalogue links to versioned releases and their change log.
