Assistants and subscriptions
Alexa+: UK Early Access is invitation and eligibility based. Amazon says it is free during Early Access, then £19.99/month, or included with Prime. Ordinary Alexa use is not described as requiring Alexa+. Review or delete voice history and use hardware microphone and camera controls where present. Ring camera or alarm functions can still require a separate Ring plan.
Gemini for Home and Google Home Premium: base assistant, media and smart-home control are separate from optional Premium. Standard was £8/month or £80/year and Advanced £16/month or £160/year when checked. Advanced camera-history and AI features depend on supported devices and country. Timers, playback and ordinary device control are not described as requiring Premium.
Apple and Sonos: HomePod has no smart-home subscription, although media services may charge. Sonos does not charge a control subscription, but services and adapters can cost extra. Sonos Voice Control is processed locally; Alexa on Sonos follows Amazon’s cloud handling.
Which should you choose?
Choose by ecosystem and room, not a universal winner. Echo Dot Max is the current compact Alexa candidate; Echo Studio is the premium Alexa audio candidate; Google Home Speaker is the current Google/Gemini speaker; Nest Hub 2nd gen is the camera-free Google display; HomePod 2nd gen is the Apple Home candidate once its live price is resolved; Sonos Era 100 is the sound-first multi-room candidate with precise assistant limits. A speaker is not automatically a universal smart-home hub.
Privacy checks
Smart speakers wait locally for a wake word, but assistant requests may then be processed in the provider’s cloud. A hardware mute control is stronger than an app toggle, but it does not erase prior voice history. Check the account’s recording, deletion, personal-results, purchases and household-profile settings. Camera displays need an additional decision about video history, face recognition and paid camera features.
Frequently asked question
Which smart speaker is easiest for an older user?
The easiest option is the one already supported by the person’s phone, contacts and household. Prioritise clear physical volume and mute controls, simple routines, reliable calling and a nearby helper account. Do not treat a consumer speaker as a fall detector or emergency-response service unless a separately certified service is configured.
